Personal Opinion

In my opinion I think Drew Barrymore has not only matured in her chosen roles but as a person over the years, it’s clear from media coverage and her autobiography that she had a troubled childhood as a ‘child star,’ experimenting with drugs and alcohol. This inevitably damaged her public image and career as studios didn’t want to risk casting her due to fears that her reputation might taint the production of their films, as well as the audience’s perception. Since overcoming her personal problems she has managed to rebuild her career, becoming one of the best known actresses in Hollywood. Securing her place in the film industry, this is evident as studios frequently use her as a main promotional figure for their releases.

Reviews

This review not only gives comment on Barrymore's attempt at Directing but also provides comments from the woman as well, helping me portray her development from the big screen to behind the scenes. It also helps my star theory link, by using her comments in the review rather than those of Ellen Page; the starring role.

The first magazine cover was published in June 1995, the second cover was published in March 2008. These covers portray the development of Drew Barrymore as a public figure, especially when you observe the sub-heading topic referring to her, and the clear contrast between the two.
“Drew Barrymore on drugs, booze, sex and starting again at 20”
“Barrymore Basics, the guy, the body and why we’re mad about drew”
I can also link her development to the obvious image change displayed on these covers and how it has matured over the years, attracting alternative acting roles inevitably appealing to a different target audience.

Drew talks about her recovery from drugs and her attempts at restarting her career. There is also an extensive amount of reference to Steven Speilberg her godfather and their relationship over the years. This source could be useful to me because it relates straight to my title, ‘Drew Barrymore; the development of a star,’ it portrays her recent struggles and the attitudes of others after finding out, causing her to struggle when re-entering the film industry but using determination to secure four releases in one year. Marking the turnaround in her career, ensuring she was seen as a serious actor. This shows how her personal issues at a young age affected her success and prevented people from casting her.
